2019 American Gold Eagle Coins

The United States Mint in 2019 was largely focused on launching the popular Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program, which was only the second time the Mint was issued curved shape coins following the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame coins. And those were the two most successful programs of this type in recent years.

2019 American Gold Eagle

Gold had a good year, but gold coin sales did not do as well. It opened at $1287.20 at the beginning of the year and finished at $1523 – an increase of about 19% for the year. The high for the year was reached in September when it hit $1542.6.

Bullion Coin

Sales of the 2019 American Gold Eagle Bullion Coins (Buy on eBay) began on January 7. Initially, they seemed strong, selling a combined total of 9,500 more ounce on the first day compared to 2018. But over time, the rising price of gold dampened sales, and for the year they were down significantly from 2018, especially the $50 coin that fell by almost 44%. Sales of the $10 and $5 coin were also down sharply. Only the $25 coin managed to remain almost stable with only a decline of 2,000 coins, or 6%. Final sales were $50 (108,000); $25 (30,000); $10 (38,000); and $5 (195,000).

Proof Coin

On March 7, the 2019-W Proof American Gold Eagle (Buy on eBay) went on sale. None of that year’s Proof Gold Eagles were sold with any mintage, product or order limits. With an initial price of $1627.50, opening sales of the $50 coin were 1,363; the $25 was initially priced at $830 and sold 455 coins to start; the $10 was priced at $427.50 and sold 614 coins to start; and the $5 gold was priced $182.50 and opening sales were 2.380. The 4-piece Proof set was priced at $3,015 and sold 3,171 sets to start. Final sales were $50 (14,697; $25 (9,454); $10 (10,613); $5 (17,809).
