Gold started 2023 at about $1,850 per ounce after a good year in 2022. By June, the spot price was back closer to $2,000 at $1,960, and it has remained there since then. The metal is up about 6% so far this year and remains not far from its all-time high of $2,070.
Bullion Coin
As for sales of the 2023 American Gold Eagle (Buy on eBay), they were strong in January. The $50 coin sold 118,000 compared to 123,500 coins in 2022 that same month. The $25 coin sold 18,500, down from 45,000 in 2022; the $10 sold 15,00, down from 64,000; and the $5 sold 115,000, down from 195,000.
As the year progressed, sales were very strong this year. The $50 coin continued to do well, even reaching 211,000 in March compared to 140,000 the prior year, and by June, it reached 637,500; the $25, which is typically the lowest seller, saw its sales do very well at 73,000 by June; the $10 sold 132,000 through June; and the $5 coin also did well, selling 385,000 by June.
Proof Coin
The 2023-W Proof American Gold Eagle (Buy on eBay) went on sale on March 30. The $50 coin had a mintage limit of 22,500, a product limit of 9,500, a household order limit of 3, and its debut price was $2,850. Initial sales were 4,099. The $25 coin had a mintage limit of 16,000 and a product limit of 3,000. Its debut price was $1,450, and it sold 1,380 coins in the first couple of days. The $10 coin had a mintage limit of 19,000 and a product limit of 6,000. Initially priced at $752.50, it sold 4,065 coins in the first couple of days. The $5 coin had a mintage limit of 31,000 and a product limit of 18,000. It was priced to start at $330 and sold 5,642 coins to start.
Furthermore, the 4-coin set had no mintage limit and a product limit of 13,000. It was priced initially at $5,332.50 and sold 5,272 units to start. These results were mostly lower than the 2022 sales.
By the time of the July 16 report, sales for these coins were: 6,441 for the $50; 1,194 for the $25; 4,462 for the $10; 11,703 for the $5; and 8,936 for the 4-coin set.
The 2023-W Burnished Uncirculated American Gold Eagle (Buy on eBay) went on sale on June 1. Opening sales were just 3,525. Sales through July 16 were 4,604
