The 2004 Gold Eagle (Buy on eBay) marked a temporary peak for the gold bullion sales numbers after several years of growth. Mintages increased by small amounts for the one ounce, one-half ounce, and one-tenth ounce coins with a small decline for the one-quarter ounce coin. Overall sales of the Gold Eagle bullion coins would experience declines for the next three years of the series.
As customary, the United States Mint produced a line of 2004 Proof Gold Eagle (Buy on eBay) collectible coins. The coins were first available on May 24, 2004, including individual options for each denomination as well as a 4 Coin Set. Price levels for each product were increased from the prior year due to the rising price of gold. The one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, one-tenth ounce, and 4 Coin Set were priced at $675, $335, $175, $90, and $1,175, respectively. Production limits were in place for each individual coin and the set.
During 2004, the price of gold briefly dipped below $400, but then moved higher in the second half of the year. The price of gold began the year at $416.25 per ounce, and closed the year at $435.60 per ounce.
